The ACE personal trainer manual, and what to study first
Most people searching for the ACE Personal Trainer Manual want the book behind the exam. Since 2020 that book is The Exercise Professional's Guide to Personal Training, a new textbook rather than another edition. This page covers it, the free PDFs that come straight from the certifier, and a study order that follows the exam's own weights.
- 4exam domains
- Program Design and Implementation (31%)largest domain
- 3–6 monthstypical study time, per the certifier
Start from the outline, not the chapter list
The exam is written to four domains, not to the textbook's chapters. Program design and modification together carry more than half of the scored items, so they deserve more than half of your study time. Each domain links to its task list and a set of questions from that domain only.

A study order that follows the points
- Learn the IFT Model first. The textbook teaches program design and progression through the model's training components and their phases. See the IFT model explained.
- Program Design and Implementation (31%). Training principles, monitoring cardio intensity by heart rate, ventilatory thresholds and RPE, exercise selection and cueing.
- Program Modification and Progression (27%). Adherence, lapses and barriers, and when to progress or regress load, volume or complexity.
- Client Onboarding and Assessments (23%). Health screening and referral, readiness for change, goal setting, and posture and movement assessments.
- Risk Management and Professional Conduct (19%) last. It is the smallest domain: risk management, standards and scope of practice, and business ethics.
After each step, work through that domain's questions and read the explanation for every option you missed. In the last weeks, switch to mixed, timed sets in the practice test.
The textbook that replaced the Personal Trainer Manual
The current book is The Exercise Professional's Guide to Personal Training (ACE, 2020). The certifier describes it as a new textbook, not a new edition of the ACE Personal Trainer Manual; it absorbed the separate Essentials of Exercise Science book. It comes with every study program, in a format that depends on the tier (what each tier includes), and the print copy alone is $149.95.
The ACE Personal Trainer Manual is the older title. Its 4th edition (2010) introduced the IFT Model, and any edition of it predates the 2020 revision of that model. A used manual from the 4th edition on teaches the earlier IFT phase names, and older editions predate the model entirely, so check every model and term against the current IFT phases.
You don't strictly need the book: the handbook says study materials are optional. It also says each question is referenced to an ACE or other exercise-science text, or an industry guideline. Its suggested reading for this exam lists the 2020 textbook next to personal-training texts from ACSM and NSCA.
Free ACE study guide PDFs and resources
These come straight from the certifier and cost nothing:
- The exam content outline: the four domains with every task, knowledge and skill statement. Use it as a checklist, and tick off each statement once you can explain it.
- The candidate handbook: eligibility, scoring, retakes, exam-day rules and renewal. Read it once, before you book.
- ACE Answers: free resources from the certifier's study coaches, including common study questions, video demonstrations and lectures, an exercise library and exam-prep blog posts.
- A free textbook chapter, offered as a preview on the study program page.
Trap: a cheat sheet written for the old model
Many exam cheat sheets in circulation were built on the earlier textbook. If one lists four cardio phases (aerobic-base through anaerobic-power), it predates the 2020 model, which has 3 phases per component. Build your own one-page sheet from the outline's task statements and the current IFT phases instead.
How long to study
The certifier's estimate is that most candidates finish the program within 3–6 months. The hard limit is the voucher: if your program includes an exam voucher, you must register with it within 6 months from purchase, with no extensions; the exam date itself can be later. Book the exam once you get mixed, timed sets right consistently, not when the calendar says so.
If you fail, the certifier suggests about one week of review for every 10 points below the passing score of 500, using the domain results you get with a failing score (retake rules).

Studying for the ACE CPT exam
What is the current ACE personal trainer textbook?
The Exercise Professional's Guide to Personal Training (2020). It replaced the ACE Personal Trainer Manual and is a new book, not a later edition of the manual.
Do I need the textbook to pass?
No. The handbook says the certifier's study materials are optional for registering and passing. The textbook teaches the certifier's own models and terms, such as the IFT Model, so if you skip it, use a resource built on the current edition.
How long should you study for the ACE personal trainer exam?
The certifier says most candidates finish the program within 3–6 months. A program's exam voucher expires 6 months from purchase, so plan your booking inside that window.
What is the best way to study for the ACE CPT exam?
Study by domain weight rather than chapter order: the IFT Model first, then program design, then modification and progression. Finish with mixed, timed practice questions that explain every option.
